Fénelon, François de Salignac de la Mothe
- Fénelon, François de Salignac de la Mothe
(1651–1715)
Archbishop, Educator and Devotional Writer.
Fénelon was born in Périgord, France and was educated at the seminary of St Sulpice. After ordination, he became Superior of a house for recent converts from Protestantism and then led a mission to the Huguenots. In 1689, he was appointed tutor to the Duke of Burgundy and, from his position at court, he became acquainted with the Quietist Madame guyon. He was consecrated Archbishop of Cambrai in 1695 and after Madame Guyon had been censured, he signed the Articles of Issy which rejected Quietism. Subsequently he was engaged in a long conflict with Jacques bossuet about mysticism, which led to his banishment in 1697. Twenty-three propositions from his book Explication des Maximes des Saints were condemned by the Pope in 1699 and Fénelon spent the rest of his life away from court in Cambrai. He is primarily remembered for his educational writings, Traité de l’Education des Filles and Télémaque, for his opposition to political absolutism as expressed in his Lettre à Louis XlV and for his devotional writings such as his Traité de l’Existence de Dieu, which was published in its final form after his death.
